The new 2013 <a href="http://aws.amazon.com/cli/" target="_blank">AWS CLI (python-based)</a> tool is really awesome!! 
 
I plan to have a script to have snapshots for all my friends' instances 
which work with EBS (volumes). First of all, I use IAM to create a user 
who have limited permissions so that I don't need all of their root 
account access/secret keys. Here are my steps.

1. Install AWS CLI</h2>
You can setup the new CLI on Windows, Mac, and Linux very easily (than previous versions). On my ubuntu server, I just need to install:

2. Create a AWS CLI config file</h2>
You will put all your access/secret keys and assigned regions at this config file: ~/.aws/config 
Please do remember to assign your region. "Region" is also important for almost all AWS CLI and AWS API calls. Also, make sure you keep this file in a save location, and 'chmod 600' may be a good idea. 
 
Here is an example one:

3. Create a profile list file</h2>
As you seen in the ~/.aws/config that we create multiple configuration profiles there, then we can choose all or some of these profiles in our snapshot script. 
 
You can create a file to list all your profiles named "profile_list" at the same folder of <a href="https://gist.github.com/dwchiang/7261458/">snapshot-multiple.sh</a> (or you can modify the path by updating "profile_list"). If you want to use this for just one AWS account, there's no problem, you can just list one profile name in this file. 
 
Here is one example:

4. Create a script for snapshot </h2>
I may update this <a href="https://gist.github.com/dwchiang/7261458/">snapshot-multiple.sh</a> script in the future so I put it at gist.

5. Test it & modify it</h2>
I choose the tag name of the running instances, and current date as the description of snapshots. You can mark the command "aws ec2 create-snapshot --volume-id $volume --description $description" with a "#" in front of this line for your testing. You will see how's going about the naming and you can modify to be the right naming format you want.

6. Run it</h2>
Once you like the description of snapshot naming rules, you can remove the "#" in front of "aws ec2 create-snapshot" and run this script. (You may need to 'chmod u+x snapshot-multiple.sh' to run it.) 
 
If you like it, you can put it in your crontab. Also, you may want to reference this AWS whitepaper "<a href="http://media.amazonwebservices.com/AWS_Backup_Recovery.pdf">Backup and Recovery Approaches Using AWS</a>" (page. 7~9) to know more about snapshots and hot backups.

我學習 AWS (Amazon Web Service) EC2 CLI 的路徑印象中是從「<a href="http://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/SettingUp_CommandLine.html#tools-introduction" target="_blank">Setting Up the Amazon EC2 Command Line Tools</a>」這篇文件裡頭開始，找到「<a href="http://aws.amazon.com/developertools/351?_encoding=UTF8&jiveRedirect=1" target="_blank">Amazon EC2 API Tools</a>」這邊下載最新版本的 CLI 工具。 
 
某天，非常巧合（或說好死不死？）地，在不同台主機上實作與測試幾個 AWS EC2 CLI 為基礎的 shell script，卻發現某一台 Ubuntu Server 怎麼跑 CLI 任一指令，都一直有問題，舊版本預設是跟你要 Private Key，完全不管你有沒有設定 Access Key 和 Secret Key：

即使已經有設定 Access Key 和 Secret Key 的值給 CLI 讀，但 CLI 卻一直跟我要 Private Key。想說哪裡鬼打牆了。才發現，這個 CLI 版本之間的差異。 
 
新版本（今天測試的是 1.6.7.1，舊版的應該是去年的了）在沒有設定 Access Key 和 Secret Key 的時候跑起來預設是跟你要 Access Key 而不是 Private Key（從文件中看起來這是 AWS 目前的方向）。

AWS EC2 CLI: 消失的 EC2_URL 參數

會留意到 EC2_URL 這個參數也是滿有趣的過程（只能說自己太晚跑來認真玩 CLI 了）。為了調整某個 backup (snapshot) shell script 而把腦筋動到「<a href="http://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/CommandLineReference/ApiReference-cmd-DescribeVolumes.html" target="_blank">ec2-describe-volumes</a>」上頭去。進而發現 region 怎麼跑都跑到美東去，即使有指定「 --region REGION 」參數到別的區也一樣。定神仔細看才發現原來是要 EC2_URL 參數。 
 
將 EC2_URL 參數設定成東京機房的範例方式在 Unix/Unix-like 和 Windows 環境分別如下：

這幾年有機會協助一些朋友一起玩或是導入 AWS (Amazon Web Services) 到各個企業或組織中，時不時會需要幫忙看一下或是調整一下，聽到有些朋友也逐漸會有在多個 AWS 帳號之間切換的需求（重度使用者可能也開始覺得 web-based console 逐漸不敷需求而轉往 CLI (Command Line Interface) 直接動手），今天跟大家分享一個簡單方便的 shell script 在多個 AWS 帳號之間做切換。 
 
本帖服用之前，有幾個注意事項先提醒大家： 
<ul>
<li>「簡單方便」這種形容詞通常會帶來其他作用，例如「不安全」「你方便別人也方便（你應該知道「別人」是在說誰）」之類的。請小心輕放，喔更正，請小心存放各個帳號的 access keys, secret keys。</li>
<li>養成習慣，隨時留意現在正在使用哪一個 AWS 帳號，以及處在哪一個 Region。賬單秒殺也是不等人的，設定一下帳單提醒通知也是不錯的建議。</li>
<li>本帖使用到了 EC2_URL 這個參數，如果你用不到，可以刪除沒關係。如果需要取得完整清單，請使用「ec2-describe-regions」。</li>
<li>你的 Access key/Secret key 可以在<a href="https://portal.aws.amazon.com/gp/aws/securityCredentials" target="_blank">這裡</a>取得。 </li>
</ul>

昨天繼續玩了剛裝起來的 EC2 Micro Instance（歡迎參閱「<a href="http://talk.ernestchiang.com/2010/09/amazon-ec2-micro-instance.html">第一次玩 Amazon EC2 Micro Instance 就上手</a>」），越玩越不順手，因為裝的是自己不熟悉的 Fedora Core 8，所以揮一揮衣袖，尋覓有沒有什麼方法可以將 <a href="http://www.ubuntu.com/cloud">Ubuntu</a> 裝在 EC2 Micro Instance 裡頭。 
 
 
 
之前搜尋到 Ubuntu 官方釋出的 Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 在各 EC2 Region 提供 32-bit(m1.small)/64-bit(m1.large) 的各種 AMI，也提供有 EBS/Instance 兩種 root store。既然手上有了 m1.small 的 Ubuntu，那接下來尋找的方向大致類似：「如何將 m1.small (Standard Instances - Small Instance) 轉成 t1.micro (Micro Instance)」，很幸運地找到 AWS Discussion Forum 的<a href="http://developer.amazonwebservices.com/connect/thread.jspa?threadID=51260">這一串討論</a>找到了提示 :) 這也提醒我別再一直故意跳過 EC2 Command Line Tool (命令列/指令列 工具) 了，哈！該看的<a href="http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AWSEC2/2010-06-15/CommandLineReference/">文件</a>還是要面對的 :p 
 
 
 
1. 
 
取得並安裝 EC2 Command Line Tool：請參閱 AWS 官方<a href="http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/index.html?SettingUp_CommandLine.html">這份文件</a>。依照大家自己手邊機器的環境做設定。（另外有一份 <a href="http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AWSEC2/2010-06-15/CommandLineReference/">Command Line Reference</a> 可以參考。） 
 
 
 
<ul>
<li>安裝 JAVA (JRE)</li>
<li>Windows XP 環境可以用：「我的電腦」右鍵 ->「內容 」->「進階」->「環境變數」的方式設定，不然就是把上述文件中的 set XXX=somepath 等東西寫到 AUTOEXEC.BAT 裡頭去。</li>
<li>至少設定好這幾個環境變數，應該 Command Line Tool 就可以動作了（其餘請參閱文件）： JAVA_HOME (ex: "d:\Program Files\jre6") EC2_HOME (ex: "e:\aws\ec2-api-tools-1.3-53907") PATH (ex: "something;%EC2_HOME%\bin") EC2_PRIVATE_KEY (ex: "~\pk-xxxxxxxxxx.pem") EC2_CERT (ex: "~\cert-xxxxxxxxxx.pem")</li>

有了 Command Line Tool 之後，就可以開始動手來試試看，先小試一個 EC2 command 玩玩看：

確定 Command Line Tool 正常運作之後，接下來進入主題囉！ 
 
首先，幾個前情題要： 
 
<ul>
<li>如果可能，最詳細的 EC2 與 Micro Instance 相關的簡要資訊在<a href="http://aws.amazon.com/ec2/">產品頁面</a>與<a href="http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AWSEC2/2010-06-15/UserGuide/">使用者手冊</a>，請參閱。</li>
<li>Micro Instance 只能用 EBS storage，沒有自己本身的 Instance storage。（可以簡單想像成這是兩種硬碟放在不同處，但是 mount 上來之後沒什麼差別。）</li>
<li>如果要指定 Security Group ，記得加上<a href="http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AWSEC2/2010-06-15/CommandLineReference/index.html?ApiReference-cmd-RunInstances.html">相關參數</a> --group</li>
<li>我自己的狀況是先建好一個 Security Group，裡頭開有至少兩個 SSH (22) 和 HTTP (80)。方便 instance 建立好的時候就能馬上直接用這兩個 port。</li>
</ul>
 
在此，以美東的 32-bit Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on m1.small 為例，加上 Security Group 設定的指令如下：（XXXX 與 GGGG 請代換。不熟悉 Command Line Tool 的話，可以先在 <a href="https://console.aws.amazon.com/ec2/">AWS Management Console</a> 介面上先設定 Key Pair 和 Security Group。）

開好這個新的 instance 之後，可以在 AWS Management Console refresh 之後看到這個新的 instance。接著來改變 instance 屬性，使之成為 Micro Instance（更多討論串內容可以參閱<a href="http://developer.amazonwebservices.com/connect/thread.jspa?threadID=51260">這裡</a>）： 
 
（以下指令中的 "instance_id" 請代換成上一步驟剛建立的 instance id。）

接下來就看大家各自發揮囉，一個基本的 Ubuntu on Micro Instance 已經建立起來了。我另外做了 associate Elastic IP 的動作。 
 
如果要 SSH 進去的話，請用 "ubuntu" 這個 username，下指令的時候搭配 "sudo" 服用即可。

第一次玩 Amazon EC2 Micro Instance 就上手

昨天第一次玩了一下 <a href="http://aws.amazon.com/ec2/">AWS EC2</a> <a href="http://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2010/09/09/announcing-micro-instances-for-amazon-ec2/">2010/9/9 剛推出</a>的 <a href="http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AWSEC2/2010-06-15/UserGuide/">Micro Instance</a> （原因後述），滿好玩的，困難度不高，比較花時間的地方是看文件、認識一些名詞定義即可。（不敢說「上手」，但很容易「入門」^^） 
 
將筆記整理如下： 
<ul>
<li>打算玩剛推出的 t1.micro instance US$0.02 per hour（關於 Micro Instance 的詳細概念圖解（<a href="http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AWSEC2/2010-06-15/UserGuide/">官方文件</a>），有說明哪些情況適合、哪些情況不適合。）（我是覺得 Micro Instance 滿適合 EC2 或 AWS 初學者的，學費很便宜，玩個一天大概 EC2 + <a href="http://aws.amazon.com/ebs/">EBS</a> = ( (US$0.02*24) + (US$0.1*15GiB) ) * 32 ~= NT$63 ，一天認真玩的話很夠用，而且 <a href="http://aws.amazon.com/ebs/">EBS</a> （以月計費）可以放一個月慢慢用。Micro Instance 限制只能使用 <a href="http://aws.amazon.com/ebs/">EBS</a> 儲存資料。）</li>
<li>註冊 AWS 帳號、申請 EC2 使用權、設定認證等資訊（這邊滿直覺的，就不詳述了）</li>
<li>到 <a href="http://www.google.com/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fconsole.aws.amazon.com%2Fec2%2F&sa=D&sntz=1&usg=AFrqEzf5sUJb8Er1rkZMC-IEuMEmAgu-hA">AWS Management Console</a></li>

<li>選 AMI（<a href="http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AWSEC2/2010-06-15/UserGuide/concepts-amis-and-instances.html">Amazon Machine Image</a>）（但目前 (2010/09/11) 只有少數幾個官方預設的 AMI 有支援 t1.micro，或是自己想辦法包 AMI 囉），因為這個是要練習 t1.micro，記得選這個，不然錢飛走的速度可是不同等級的喔 XD</li>
<li>我先選了 "<img alt="Getting Started on Fedora Core 8" src="https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/G/01/webservices/console/logo_fedora.gif" />Getting Started on Fedora Core 8 (AMI Id: ami-b232d0db)"（愛用 Ubuntu 的朋友可以參考<a href="http://talk.ernestchiang.com/2010/09/amazon-ec2-micro-instance-ubuntu-cloud.html">這一篇</a>）</li>
<li>其他的都照預設值先設定過去，包含下載一組 KeyPair *.pem</li>
</ul>
<li>啟用後可以查到那台虛擬機器的 "Public DNS" (ex: ec2-xxx-xx-xxx-xxx.compute-1.amazonaws.com)</li>
<li>SSH: 參考這篇「<a href="http://www.google.com/url?q=http%3A%2F%2Fchangyy.pixnet.net%2Fblog%2Fpost%2F25494183&sa=D&sntz=1&usg=AFrqEzfvBP9UNxVt8QGBHEywcXtxsJgjiA">Amazon EC2 使用教學 - 以 SSH/PuTTY 連線 Linux 機器</a>」可以將 *.pem 轉成 *.ppk（若是用 <a href="http://www.google.com/url?q=http%3A%2F%2Fntu.csie.org%2F%257Epiaip%2Fpietty%2F&sa=D&sntz=1&usg=AFrqEzeVJjesnIPxN8imnVFWaPW8_XjOYQ">pietty</a> 也是類似的作法，先用 <a href="http://www.google.com/url?q=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.chiark.greenend.org.uk%2F%257Esgtatham%2Fputty%2Fdownload.html&sa=D&sntz=1&usg=AFrqEzfXDhQeIsomGnddvlad8gLnQuKeWQ">puttygen</a> 產生 *.ppk 後進去 pietty 的「選項」->「詳細設定...」指定該 *.ppk 給自己的 EC2 機器即可。）（或是參考<a href="http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AWSEC2/2010-06-15/UserGuide/AccessingInstances.html">這份官方文件</a>說明）</li>
<li>用 root SSH 連線進去之後會看到這個畫面 <pre class="brush: plain">

<li>Elastic IPs: 產生一組 Elastic IP，然後連結 (Associate) 到剛剛建立的那個 instance （IP 和 Public DNS 的值會改變）（這個 IP 可以拿來設定 DNS A。）</li>
